Though he describes himself primarily, as a writer and a person trying to make music that he would love, Zy Yung is known in hip hop circles as a lyrical perfectionist, soulful beatmaker, mentor, and purveyor of hip hop culture.
Infamous as the co-founder and former facilitator of the Cypher at the Capitol, a weekly gathering of emcess to rap on the foreground of Austin's capitol building, Zy has made a name for himself with freestyles which transition smoothly from quirky self-depricating punchlines to grandiose braggadocio, and guest appearances full of mind-blowing metaphors.
Zy infuses his musical offerings with a philosophy based on respecting his listeners, embodying the best of hip hop culture, and creating songs that represent the fullness of what it is to be human. But Zy will be the first to tell you that he hopes when you listen to his music, that you think it jams before anything else.
His first release, conceptionalized, produced, written, and recorded during a five week span when he was in between jobs, is comically (and quite appropriately) titled, I Quit My Day Job. It is widely regarded as one of the most lyrical releases to drop in 2012, and is available for free download.
His slated projects include a collaboration album with rapper Teo Blake, for which Zy is handling the production, and his highly anticipated debut album.
